A LITTLE ELF-HELP
How to Decorate a Christmas Tree
A tree does not need to match a catalogue. It needs a little balance and a lot of you.

Pick a small colour family
Choose two or three colours you enjoy together. Red and gold feel traditional; silver and pearl tones create a frosted look. A repeated colour helps a mixed collection feel connected, even when the decorations themselves are wonderfully different.
Arrange the lights first
If you have an unlit tree, arrange suitable lights before adding ornaments. Follow the tree and light instructions and check the lights before dressing the branches. Keep cables safely positioned and do not overload sockets. For a pre-lit tree, follow its own setup instructions.
Build a base with bauble sets
Spread the main baubles around the tree before adding the smaller details. Mix heights and move around the tree as you work, checking it from the places where people will actually see it. Larger baubles can anchor the look; smaller baubles help fill the gaps without crowding every branch.
Let the characters have their moment
Add felt animals, a rocking horse or a miniature hot chocolate where they can be seen. These decorations bring personality, so give them breathing room. Keep fragile or small decorations out of reach of children and pets, and follow each product’s safety guidance.
Finish with bows and a topper
Place bows where the tree needs a little softness, then add a topper that suits the height and shape of the tree. Step back, move one or two pieces if needed, and stop before decorating becomes homework. The best finishing touch might be a mince pie.
